Leadership readiness bell curve
Their next leadership opportunity
Would it be helpful to you as Human Resources (HR), if after having sent your team members to a leadership workshop, you get feedback as to how soon they might be ready for their next leadership opportunity?
This is something that I was experimenting with in the early half of 2023.
Typically a First time leadership inhouse workshop for a corporate client is a minimum 2 days with an average class size of around 10 participants, spanning 9 to 10 out of the 20 modules.
Originally what I was trying to do was to determine if my participants understood each topic, and how all the topics covered are interconnected to the subject called Leadership.
Asked for further feedback
Then I noticed that HR would ask me if I had any further feedback on specific participants, and their progress as a leader.
I would give my feedback, and it was often turn out to be pretty much aligned on that HR themselves have been observing with those same participants.
Looking at it, what I was trying to do was:
1 – Ascertain where a participant is in their leadership journey based on their responses to each module,
2 – Listen to the words they use and how they go about explaining the module concepts covered,
3 – Take note of their confidence level when sharing in front of their peers,
4 – Spot their readiness to relate the module concepts back to past experiences.
It is these signs, and possibly more, that tells me if a participant is ready to go for his or her next leadership opportunity, or if they need more time in their current one.
This is something that came as a result of the contributions from many leaders in pointing out the specific insights needed to be an effective team leader.
So now I offer this insight when I work with a corporate client.
Next step
Perhaps the next step would be to create an assessment out of this, so that organisations can have regular insights into how ready their leaders are for their next leadership opportunity?
If you were HR, would you find this useful?
